Learning About Oversteer and Understeer

The casual driver might not think about anything beyond merely skidding, but there are plenty of different ways that your vehicle can shift a little on the road. Among the different things drivers will experience depending on the vehicle are oversteer and understeer. Knowing the difference is a good thing.

With understeer, the front wheels keep straight as opposed to turning with the steering wheel. This results in the vehicle not turning enough. Oversteer is when the back of the vehicle fishtails from behind the vehicle.

One of the ways to understand oversteer and understeer is that understeer would cause your vehicle to not turn enough and go off of the road. With oversteer, your vehicle is sharper in how it turns and can actually spin around. Some vehicles have been designed with drive modes that can correct the issues so that you can drive more safely.
